CIS admin piling up alongside the actual work?
Contractors and subcontractors operating under CIS carry a compliance load that most people underestimate. Monthly returns, subcontractor verification, deduction statements, gross payment status — each one has a deadline and a penalty attached. When the build schedule is busy, the admin waits. Then it compounds.
- Monthly CIS returns filed late or incorrectly, triggering HMRC penalties
- Subcontractors paid at the wrong deduction rate because verification was skipped or done in error
- Deduction statements not issued on time, leaving subcontractors unable to reclaim what they are owed
What sorted looks like
CIS compliance is largely a process problem. When the process is in place and run consistently, it is not complicated. The returns go in, the verifications get done, the statements go out — all on time, every month.
- CIS returns filed accurately and on time every month, no late penalties
- Every subcontractor verified through HMRC before payment — correct rate, documented
- Deduction statements issued promptly after each payment period, every time
- Fixed monthly fee, scoped to your actual volume — no invoices you were not expecting
What clients say about working with us
Contractors who have switched to Next Level typically arrive with a backlog and leave with a process. Here is what two of them said.
I switched accountants to work with Annabel because I felt she truly cared about helping businesses to take control of their finances. She opened my eyes to how an accountant actually should work with you! She has fixed so many lazy, unprofessional mistakes by my old accountant by being so meticulously thorough, offering amazing business advice & has saved me thousands! She even went through my dad’s accounts who had been through liquidation & had a really tough time just because she cared & wanted to see if she could help. I 100% trust Annabel & she proves time & time again why it was the best move for my business to switch to her. I highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for someone who genuinely cares, who is meticulously thorough & offers great advice!

What CIS compliance with us covers
The monthly return is the visible part. Everything underneath it — verification, statements, year-end reconciliation — runs on the same fixed fee.
Monthly CIS Returns, Filed On Time
Your monthly CIS return submitted to HMRC accurately and on time, every month. Subcontractors verified through the HMRC CIS online service before the first payment goes out, and their deduction rates confirmed and documented. No late filing penalties, no guesswork on who should be deducted at 20% and who at 30%.
Included as standardDeduction Statements and Subcontractor Records
A CIS deduction statement issued to each subcontractor after every payment period, so they have what they need to reclaim deductions at year-end. All records kept in order — payment amounts, deductions, verification references — ready if HMRC ever asks. This is the part most contractors let slip, and the part subcontractors care about most.
Included as standardYear-End Reconciliation and Tax Planning
CIS deductions suffered as a subcontractor are reconciled against your year-end accounts and Corporation Tax liability — so you reclaim what you are owed and do not overpay. If you are a contractor, your CIS liability is cross-checked against payments made and HMRC records. The numbers tie together before year-end, not after.
Included as standardThree clients, three different situations
The context varies — new business, switching accountants, rescuing a backlog. The outcome is consistent: clean books, no penalties, less to worry about.

Why contractors choose us over anyone else
CIS is not complicated when it is run properly. These are the things that make the difference between a process that works and one that creates problems.
CIS Process That Actually Runs
Monthly CIS returns, subcontractor verification and deduction statements all run on a consistent monthly cycle — not chased at the last minute. Contractors working with us do not miss return deadlines because there is a process in place that does not depend on anyone remembering. That is what compliance looks like when it is set up properly.
Verification Done Before Payment
Every new subcontractor is verified through HMRC before the first payment goes out. The deduction rate — 20%, 30% or gross — is confirmed and documented. This is the step that gets skipped most often and causes the most problems when HMRC checks. It does not get skipped here.
Award-Winning and AAT Licensed
South England Prestige Awards Winner 2025/26, Visionary Woman Founder to Watch 2026, and a fully qualified, insured and regulated AAT Licensed Accountant. Every CIS return, every deduction statement, every verification is handled by Annabel directly — not passed to a junior or an outsourced team.
Up and running in three straightforward steps
The onboarding process is designed to take the admin off your plate from the first conversation. You do not need to have everything in order before you call.
Free discovery call
A free, no-obligation 20-30 minute call. Annabel asks about your business, how you are currently handling CIS, and where the gaps are. No scripts, no pitch deck. If you are carrying a backlog of unfiled returns or missing statements, that is fine — it just gets factored into the proposal.
Tailored proposal sent to you
A proposal built around your specific situation — contractor, subcontractor, or both. Volume of subcontractors, current state of records, whether catch-up work is needed. A clear monthly fee with no surprises. Not a template tier.
We handle the handover
If you are switching from another accountant or taking on CIS compliance properly for the first time, we manage the transition. Previous returns reviewed, subcontractor records reconciled, HMRC authorisation sorted. You do not need to coordinate between us and anyone else.
CIS running cleanly every month
Returns filed, verifications done, statements out — on the same monthly cycle, without you having to chase it. You know your CIS is compliant, your subcontractors have what they need, and HMRC correspondence is handled. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.
“I have recently had the pleasure of the wonderful service of Annabel, appointed as my bookkeeper and accountant. Having never been self employed or a limited company before, the support and advice I have had has been extremely helpful and has set my mind at ease knowing that any problems or queries I have will be handled or answered. Friendly, supportive and very quick to respond to any queries or sort advice. I would 100% recommend.”
Common questions about CIS compliance
Do you handle both contractor and subcontractor CIS obligations?
Yes — contractors need to verify subcontractors, file monthly returns and issue deduction statements. Subcontractors need those statements to reclaim deductions against their tax liability at year-end. Both sides are handled. If you operate as both a contractor and a subcontractor, which is common, the obligations are managed together.
What does CIS compliance typically cost, and what is included?
Fees are scoped to your specific situation — primarily the number of subcontractors you pay each month and whether catch-up work is needed at the start. Everything is discussed on the free discovery call and set out in a clear proposal before you commit. There is no public price list, because a sole trader with two subcontractors has a genuinely different workload from a contractor with fifteen. What you get for the fee is the full monthly cycle: verification, returns, statements, and HMRC liaison if anything comes up.
My CIS returns are behind and I have not been issuing deduction statements. Can you sort it?
That is a fairly common starting position. Late CIS returns attract fixed penalties from HMRC — £100 per month for the first twelve months, rising sharply after that — so the first job is to understand exactly what is outstanding and get it filed. Catch-up work is costed separately from the ongoing monthly fee and scoped once the state of your records is clear. It is manageable, but it is better addressed sooner rather than later.
Am I tied in for a minimum term?
No minimum contract. If it is not working after three months, you leave with tidy records and nothing owed beyond the work done. The aim is that you stay because the compliance is running properly and the service is worth it — not because there is a clause stopping you from leaving.
Can you apply for gross payment status on my behalf?
Yes. Gross payment status allows a subcontractor to be paid without deductions, which improves cash flow considerably. To qualify, HMRC assesses your turnover, compliance record and tax payment history. If you meet the thresholds, an application is straightforward. If you do not yet meet them, the position can be kept under review as your business grows.
How do CIS deductions I have suffered affect my year-end tax bill?
If you are a subcontractor operating through a limited company, CIS deductions suffered are offset against your Corporation Tax liability. If more has been deducted than you owe, HMRC repays the difference — but only if the year-end accounts and CT600 are filed correctly and the CIS deductions are reconciled properly. That reconciliation is part of what the year-end work covers, so you do not leave money with HMRC that you are entitled to back.
